UNION PACIFIC POSTAL STORAGE CAR 904270

American Car and Foundry (ACF) built this postal storage car in June 1957 for Union Pacific Railroad. This 74-foot steel car was originally painted in the railroad’s familiar Armor Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray colors and numbered 5745, the last in the car series numbered 5711-5745. Union Pacific used these cars in conjunction with Railway Post Office (RPO) cars to store mail, baggage or Railway Express Agency (REA) shipments.

Upon retirement from passenger and mail train service, Union Pacific painted the car in its standard maintenance of way (MOW) green used on railcars in this service and it was renumbered 904270. Museum supporter Harry Adams, who privately owned the car after UP disposed of it, donated it to GPTM in September 2003. The car is now used as the museum woodworking shop.
