SCHOOL TOURS

The Great Plains Transportation Museum offers educational tours where students
learn about the rich history of the railroad and education on rail safety.
Field Trips

Bring learning to life with a field trip to the Great Plains Transportation Museum. Our guided tours immerse students in the history, science, and real-world operations of railroading across Wichita and the Great Plains. From how trains move and communicate to the evolution of rail systems over time, students gain a deeper understanding through storytelling and hands-on discovery.

Each visit is led by our education coordinator and thoughtfully aligned with key Kansas Department of Education standards—delivered in a way that keeps students engaged, curious, and having fun. Every tour also includes an interactive activity, such as exploring how the massive drive wheels of a steam locomotive translate motion into movement, or measuring sound levels using a decibel meter at one of our historic engines.

It’s a field trip that balances education and excitement—giving students something they’ll remember long after they leave.
